Hiring in the Philippines: what construction businesses should check

How to assess a Philippines-based construction hire, compare service models and prepare a workable first assignment.

The Philippines has a large workforce across many disciplines. For an Australian construction business, that alone is not a hiring reason. The useful question is whether you can find someone with the right project experience, give them clear work and support them properly once they start.

Start with the role, not the location

Describe the outputs you need. An estimator might prepare take-offs, supplier RFQs and a comparison for local review. A drafter might produce models and drawing revisions in your software. An accounts hire might keep invoices, reconciliations and job-cost records current. List the work the person will own and what your team will approve.

Specify the project types, tools, working hours and any Australian experience that is essential. “Construction experience” on its own is too broad: civil infrastructure, residential building and structural steel detailing call for different people.

Check the candidate’s own work

Ask what they personally produced on a relevant project, which software they used and who reviewed the result. Where confidentiality permits, review a work sample or set a short agreed assessment. Interviews should cover how the person raises a missing drawing, unclear scope or conflicting instruction, not only their CV.

Plan the handover and working rhythm

Assign a manager on your side, define the first two or three tasks and agree how drawings, estimates or records will be checked. Set working hours that allow useful overlap and explain where questions go when a reviewer is unavailable. Treat the person as part of your team, with access and feedback appropriate to the role.

If several hires need to share work, plan the handoffs as well as the headcount. Our team guide shows possible starting points and the historical Stratum Civil example. If you are deciding whether a single role fits, tell us about the work and we can discuss the experience and budget required.
