Hiring an Offshore Civil 3D Drafter: How Do You Know They Can Do the Work?

The CV says Civil 3D. The portfolio looks good. But can this person pick up one of your projects and produce work your team can use?

If you run a civil engineering practice or a contractor with its own drafting workload, that is the question worth answering before you hire.

To assess an offshore Civil 3D drafter, match their experience to your project type, review their own contribution to previous work and use a small practical task. Have your technical lead inspect the editable model, its references and the resulting drawings. The same checks are useful for a local hire.

What can an offshore Civil 3D drafter take off your desk?

A suitable drafter can support recurring model and drawing production using your approved information, templates and review process. The scope depends on what they have actually done before.

Match the drafter’s experience to your workload
Your recurring workExperience to look for
Earthworks and site documentationWorking with surfaces, supplied survey information, contours, boundaries and drawing production.
Roads and subdivisionsRelevant alignment, profile and cross-section work. Add corridor experience where the role requires it.
Stormwater documentationUpdating pipe networks, drainage plans, long sections and labels from approved design information.
Drawing revisions and issue setsFollowing mark-ups through the model, affected sheets, revision records and PDF outputs.

A drafter supporting subdivision documentation may be a different fit from someone maintaining complex road corridors. Autodesk’s Civil 3D professional certification covers several separate areas, including surfaces, networks, corridors and collaboration. A software name on a CV does not tell you which of those the person uses confidently.

Define the design decisions and review responsibilities separately. Your project’s designated engineer or design lead should retain the decisions and approvals assigned to them.

Start with a brief that describes the work

Write down the tasks you want the person handling in their first month. A useful brief might say:

We need a Civil 3D drafter to support subdivision and stormwater documentation. They will update existing models from engineer mark-ups, maintain drawing references and prepare plans and long sections for review. Our engineer provides design direction and approves the output.

Add your software release, templates, project standards and typical deliverables. If 12d Model is essential to the job, specify and assess that separately. Civil 3D experience alone does not demonstrate proficiency in another package.

Be equally clear about experience you can help someone develop. Familiarity with a particular council’s drawing requirements may be trainable; independently maintaining your core Civil 3D workflow may need to be demonstrated before starting.

What should you look for in a Civil 3D portfolio?

Ask the candidate to walk through one relevant project. A drainage plan is more useful to your hiring decision when they can explain the source information, what they changed and who reviewed it.

  • What did you personally produce on this project?
  • Which Civil 3D objects did you create or edit?
  • How were the model and sheet drawings connected?
  • What changed during the project, and how did you update the affected outputs?
  • What did you ask the engineer or reviewer to clarify?

Where permitted, review the working file as well as the PDF. Autodesk explains that Civil 3D surfaces contain underlying data and operations, including boundaries and breaklines. A contour plan alone cannot show how that surface was assembled.

The same principle applies to references. Xrefs and data shortcuts serve different referencing functions. Ask the candidate to explain how the files in their example depend on each other and what they check when source information changes.

Only request material they have permission to share. If previous files are confidential, use a prepared sample project. An employer’s confidentiality requirements should not count against a candidate.

Use a small revision task before making the decision

For a drainage documentation role, a useful assessment is a short revision to an existing Civil 3D pipe network and its drawing outputs. It shows whether the candidate can follow your process and hand back usable work.

Prepare a sample drawing with a short pipe run, a long-section sheet and your template. Supply engineer-approved mark-ups, such as one revised invert level and one structure label change. Keep the exercise within the responsibilities you are hiring for.

Ask the candidate to update the relevant model objects, check the affected labels and views, and return the native files, a revised PDF and a brief change note. They should list any missing or conflicting information for clarification.

For a small, prepared exercise, 60–90 minutes is a reasonable starting allowance. Adjust it for setup and complexity, agree payment and permitted tools in advance, and use comparable briefs for shortlisted candidates. This is a suggested hiring exercise, not a formal certification test.

Your technical reviewer can use these checks:

A practical Civil 3D assessment checklist
CheckWhat the reviewer should establish
Model and drawing agreementThe relevant objects reflect the supplied changes, and the affected views and labels agree.
Reference handlingThe required source files are identified and the agreed references resolve on the review setup.
Project setupUnits, supplied coordinate information, templates and naming follow the brief.
Revision coverageAll requested changes are accounted for, including affected sheets and revision notes.
Judgement and handoverUnclear instructions are raised, and the reviewer can follow what changed and what remains open.

Discuss the result with the candidate. A small mistake they can identify and explain is different from a workflow they do not understand. Record what they demonstrated and what would need support during onboarding.

Check the software setup you actually use

Confirm the Civil 3D release and update level, required add-ins, templates, reference locations and collaboration arrangement before the assessment.

This matters with current versions too. Autodesk’s 20 October 2026 update notes for Civil 3D 2027.1 describe changes to data shortcut collaboration and drainage analysis. Those capabilities depend on the software and workflow in use.

Autodesk’s compatibility guidance also identifies differences between releases. Being able to open a DWG does not establish that every object can be edited as intended. Test the handover in your actual environment.

Make Australian project requirements clear

Australian project experience is useful when it matches your work. Ask which project types, authorities, drawing requirements and review processes the candidate has used.

There is no single drawing template that covers every Australian civil project. For example, Queensland TMR publishes its own Drafting and Design Presentation Standards for road infrastructure. Apply the requirements relevant to your project, including the client’s and approving authority’s requirements.

Provide an approved example set and a named reviewer. Begin with a contained package, review it together and build responsibility as the person becomes familiar with your work.

How Lynk helps you find the right drafter

At Lynk, we recruit dedicated offshore drafters around your discipline, software and workload. We screen against the brief, arrange interviews and coordinate a practical assessment using material you are authorised to share. Your technical team reviews the output before you choose.

Once someone joins, Lynk handles Philippine employment and local support from our Manila office. You provide the project brief, software access, templates and technical review process. The aim is to build familiarity with your recurring work, so the same person can take on more documentation as your team gains confidence.

If you want someone contributing in January, leave time for this assessment and a useful handover before the break. Our guide to hiring before Christmas explains how to plan backwards from the work you need covered.

Frequently asked questions

Is AutoCAD experience enough for a Civil 3D role?

It is useful background, but assess the Civil 3D workflows the job needs. Someone producing 2D drawings may not have maintained surfaces, alignments, networks or data shortcuts. Ask for a relevant demonstration.

Can an offshore Civil 3D drafter work on Australian projects?

Yes, with suitable experience, access to your project standards and an agreed review process. Include Australian project experience in the brief where it is essential. Keep engineering decisions and issue approvals with the people assigned those responsibilities.

What if a candidate cannot share their previous models?

Ask them to explain their responsibilities and use a sample assessment instead. Previous employers may restrict file sharing. A controlled task gives your reviewer material they can inspect without requesting confidential project files.

How much does an offshore Civil 3D drafter cost?

The fee depends on experience, Civil 3D capability and the responsibilities you need covered. Use Lynk’s drafter pricing guide as a starting point and request a quote for your brief. Confirm specialist software licences, setup costs and deposit requirements separately.
